Overview
The prostate usually has two phases of growth. The first phase begins in the late stages of puberty and the second phase begins later in life at around 45 years of age. Sometimes the prostate may grow abnormally, especially in the second phase of growth. A number of natural remedies are available to treat an enlarged prostate.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is rich in active chemical compounds that help regulate urinary flow rates. It also helps to restore normal hormonal levels, which in inhibits abnormal growth of the prostate. Saw palmetto can be taken in the form of a supplement, which is available at many health stores and pharmacies.
Prostate Massage
A study by the National Institute of Health (NIH) showed that prostate massage has been found to be effective in treating enlarged prostate. This technique helps to discharge seminal fluid from the prostate gland, relieving pressure in the prostate area.
Watermelon
An herbal tea decoction brewed from the seeds of watermelon is a traditional Amish remedy for enlarged prostate. To make this tea, place 1/4 cup of the seeds in 2 cups of water and bring the water to a boil. Simmer this for 10 to 20 minutes, strain the brewed tea and allow it to cool down. Drink this tea once a day for 10 days.
Pumpkin Seed
Douglas Schar, a clinical herbal advisor, recommends pumpkinseed as a remedy for enlarged prostate (See Resources below). Pumpkinseed is rich in phytosterols, chemical compounds that have been found to help to shrink the prostate. It also has potent diuretic properties that help flush out the system. These seeds can either be eaten plain or in the form of an herbal tea.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in an antioxidant compound called lycopene. Lycopene helps to neutralize the cancerous effects of free radicals, which contribute to the abnormal enlargement of the prostate gland. Furthermore, it helps to reduce the frequency with which the individual needs to pass urine. It also helps protects the prostate from diseases.
Vegetable juice
Combine two parts spinach juice with three parts carrot juice and drink a glass of this every day. These vegetable juices are effective in treating prostate enlargement.
Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are effective as a remedy for prostate enlargement. They can be taken as a dietary supplement from the health store or pharmacy. Alternatively, the person can eat fish that are high in omega-3 oil such as salmon and tuna.
