Natural Products to Aid Sleep

Overview

natural products aid sleep : Overview
We've all had the occasional sleepless night, tossing and turning and unable to get to sleep. It may not be a regular problem, but something that happens a few times a month. If that's the case, or you just don't want to take prescription sleep aids, there are some natural products and remedies you can try to get the sandman to show up at your door.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone found naturally in the body that regulates the body's circadian rhythms. The brain's pineal gland makes serotonin, which is converted into melatonin when it begins to get dark. Melatonin levels in the body are generally highest at night, just before your body's natural bedtime. For this reason, melatonin is popular with travelers trying to avoid jet lag. Melatonin supplements generally come in pill form. Both natural and synthetic melatonin can be found, but synthetic is generally recommended, as natural melatonin, which comes from the pineal glands of animals, can be contaminated and carry viruses.

Valerain

Valerian is an herbal extract from the Valerian plant that is native to Europe and Asia, and it has been used to combat anxiety and insomnia for many years. The way it works is not entirely understood; however, it seems to increase the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). Valerian comes in many forms, including capsules, extracts and tea. It should not be combined with prescription antidepressants; see a doctor if you are taking any other medications.

Chamomile

Chamomile has been used for centuries to aid in sleep. It is an herbal remedy most commonly found in tea form. Chamomile generally produces a calming effect in the body, allowing for better relaxation and sleep.

Kava

Kava, also known as kava-kava root, is found on South Pacific islands and has been used by the residents of the islands for centuries. It produces brain wave changes similar to the ones produces by Valium. Caution is advised; Kava is under investigation by the FDA as it has been linked with liver disease. However some researchers believe this is only true of the capsule, which is the most common form of kava supplement. Kava can also be found in a liquid form, and is sold as a drink in Hawaii and other South Pacific islands.

Lavender

Lavender is a flowering herb found throughout the world. It can be used in a tea, as an essential oil, and its dried flowers and leaves can be used in scented sachets. Its aroma can have a calming effect, making it an effective sleep aid.
