Overview
Age spots, which are also called liver spots, are flat brown or black spots that commonly occur on the face, shoulders and arms. Although they are most common among people 40 and older, they may occasionally occur among younger people as well. While they are not harmful, age spots are a blemish on the skin and may result in lowered self-esteem. They can, however, be treated with a few natural remedies. Read on to learn more:
Fresh Lemon
Squeeze half a lemon and apply the lemon juice over the affected skin every night. Leave the juice on for up to 10 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. This has the effect of gradually fading away the age spots. You will need to continue this routine consistently for a period of six to eight weeks before you begin to notice any changes.
Oil and Vinegar
Combine one tablespoon of olive oil with one tablespoon of vinegar. Allow this to sit for about five minutes and then swab it onto the affected skin twice a day.
Home-made Facial Cleanser
Grind one tablespoon of oatmeal in a coffee grinder, and place into a bowl. Add one tablespoon of yogurt, one tablespoon of sour cream and one teaspoon of lemon. Apply this to your face and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash off the cleanser with some lukewarm water.
Unripe Papaya
Rub the fleshy side of an unripe papaya peel over the affected area and leave this for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat this consistently once every night. This has the effect of facilitating the fading away of age spots. You can substitute the papaya peels with watermelon peel.
Fresh Cucumber
Thinly slice some fresh cucumber slices and rub these onto the affected area. Alternatively, juice the cucumber and apply the cucumber juice. Let this stay on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse it off.
Castor or Olive Oil
Swab castor oil on the area affected by age spots using a cotton ball. Repeat this twice a day. This is a gentle, yet effective natural treatment for age spots. You can substitute the castor oil for olive oil if you prefer.
Homemade Facial Mask
Mix one tablespoon of buttermilk with one tablespoon of tomato paste. Apply this to the affected area and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
