Overview
Meditation is a sacred activity and has been around for thousands of years. Currently, many men and women enjoy the activity of meditating to balance their lives and clear their heads to help their energy flow. Meditation can be done sitting cross-legged on the floor, on a mat, on a cushion or in a specially made chair that is only a couple inches off of the ground with a cushion on top. This type of meditation is simple to construct and will help make your meditation experience more comfortable.
Step 1
Decide how large you want your meditation chair. The usual size is comfortable enough for a grown lean adult to sit in, with each side of the chair being 3 feet long. The cushion will be about this size as well. Decide what color, style and type of fabric you would like to cushion your meditation chair with. Make sure it is extremely comfortable and creates a relaxing atmosphere for you. To avoid distractions, stay away from shiny or bold-colored fabrics. Buy double the amount of fabric for both cushions.
Step 2
Choose what type of material you would like within your cushions. Down feathers, cotton, foam, Tempur-Pedic, or wool are all popular fillers for cushions. Remember you are stuffing one large cushions, 3 feet long by 3 feet wide, and another smaller pillow that is 1.5 feet by 1.5 feet.
Step 3
Take four planks of wood that measure 3 feet long by 2 inches wide and lay them in a square on the ground. Attach them using the electric screwdriver until they're secured.
Step 4
Take two more wood planks that measure 3 feet long by 2 inches wide and use the handsaw to remove 1 inch of the wood off one side. Place these two within the square of the four attached planks. Make sure they are equally spread in the square to disperse the weight. For example, place one of the two planks 1/2 foot from the side, move another 1/2 foot and secure the other one. Secure them with the electric screwdriver from the sides of the two planks they are are touching. This secures the base of the meditation chair.
Step 5
Turn the square of planks upside down. Take the remaining plank that measures 3 feet long by 2 inches wide and saw it into four equally measured pieces. Sand each of these down as desired; you can round off the edges or square them off. These are going to be the feet of the chair. Attach each one to the plank in each corner of the base square using the electric screwdriver. The feet should fit into corners of the squares, slightly jutting out, like a puzzle.
Step 6
Turn the chair back over to rest it on the feet. Take the remaining two planks that measure 2 feet long by 4 inches wide. These are going to be the two sides of the back of the meditation chair. Use the screwdriver to secure each one perpendicular to the back two corners of the chair's base. Make sure they are very secure using multiple screws, or even a hammer and nails.
Step 7
Take the two planks that measure 3 feet long by 4 inches wide, which will serve as the backrest. Place one of the planks overlapping across the two side planks of the chair's back. Use the screwdriver to secure it 4 inches from the top. Take the other plank and place it 5 more inches down the chair's back. Secure it using the screwdriver. The cushion will be resting on top of these planks.
Step 8
Lay out the chosen fabric on top of the seat part of the chair until it is covered. Measure out another layer of the fabric on top of this one until it covers the chair. Cut this length of fabric. Keep it as a double layer of fabric and cut it into the desired shape of your seat cushion. Stuff it with the chosen stuffing, then sew up the sides tightly. Cut any loose threads or weird angles.
Step 9
Make the back cushion. Cut a two lengths of fabric 3 feet by 3 feet. Sew the fabric together halfway, then stuff it with the desired stuffing. Slowly sew up the back cushion while stuffing it tightly. Cut any loose threads or weird angles.
Step 10
Place the cushions on your meditation chair, and enjoy. Clean regularly.
