Family HealthKeeping skin clear and healthy requires more than simply cleaning the face regularly. Good nutrition, plenty of water, and exercise all factor as part of a healthy skin regimen. Clear, healthy skin needs regular care with gentle cleansers to remove impurities from the pores that cause breakouts. Committing to healthy skin involves changing eating habits, washing regularly, and moisturizing the skin.
Diet
Diet plays a large role in the consistency of the skin as well as the occurrence of pimples. Lean proteins, fruits and vegetables give your body plenty of nutrients. Diets filled with sugars and junk foods promote the secretion of oils through our skin that prompt breakouts. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, fats and processed foods helps prevent breakouts. Vitamin C and E are known to promote healthy skin growth, so choose a variety of foods high in vitamins and minerals. Water consumption also plays a role in keeping skin clear and healthy. Water is our body's helper in flushing toxins out of the system. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables to your diet and you'll be benefiting your skin with the natural antioxidants contained in these foods.
Sleep
Sleep is the restorative mode for our bodies, and the same thing is true for our skin. Since our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, it requires rest too. Add baggy eyes and under-eye circles as a great indicator of unhealthy skin, and you've got a recipe for a puffy face. Getting the correct amount of sleep each night allows your skin cells to rejuvenate. Do your skin a favor and sleep at least 7 to 8 hours each night.
Cleansing and Moisturizing
Choosing to sleep without washing your face might seem like a great idea as your head crashes onto the pillow. However, the "day's dirt" in the form of pollution and grime are being rubbed into your skin throughout the night. Instead, wash your face with a gentle cleanser every morning and night. You'll be removing the impurities from your skin and hydrating it. Apply a light and appropriate facial moisturizer, including eye cream to prevent wrinkles around the eyes.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is one of the best tools for preventing wrinkles and skin damage. Clear, healthy skin shows little or no sun damage. The only way to prevent sun damage is to completely stay out of the sun or regularly apply sunscreen as protection. Smooth on SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before applying makeup every day. Even during the coldest days of the year, your skin is exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun.
Skin Problems
As annoying as a pimple is, it's really a natural reaction of your body fighting bacteria. The best way to fight pimples includes keeping your skin as healthy as possible with diet, water and proper cleansing.
It's best not to pick or press on pimples since your fingernails are very dirty and can add even more bacteria to the inflamed skin. If you must pop a pimple, wrap your fingers in tissue and press gently. It's much better to simply press a warm washcloth to the pimple to help reduce the swelling and prevent scarring. See your doctor for diagnosis and treatment on ongoing acne and skin problems such as rashes or rosacea.
