Building Healthy Families

Overview

Building a healthy family can be challenging, especially in today's world of fast-food and fast-living. Although it may be challenging, it is certainly not impossible. Adopting a healthy lifestyle and teaching your children good habits from the start can help to ensure that you will build a healthy family. Good nutrition, exercise and stress management are essential to a healthy mind and body.

Diet and Nutrition

A proper diet is necessary to ensure that the body receives the nutrition it needs. The food we eat can greatly affect our health and energy levels. Food provides the body with energy as well as the vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly. It is important to eat a balanced diet which includes plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. It is also important not to skip meals throughout the day if possible. Although fast food is a nice convenience every now and then, eating pizza or other take-out should be a treat rather than a regular diet. Forget the burger and fries and opt for the healthy salad instead.

Exercise

Exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle for adults and children as well. Many people have become victims of sedentary lifestyles due to desk jobs and other lifestyle factors. We often sit in front of a computer for long hours and even children may be glued to the television screen playing video games. It is necessary to get up and get moving. Walk instead of driving. Get the whole family involved in outdoor activities such as hiking, bicycling, swimming and playing ball. Fresh air and sunshine are also necessary for good health. Some time in the sun is necessary for the body to manufacture vitamin D which is a nutrient the body needs.

Sleep

Getting sufficient sleep is just as necessary as getting adequate exercise. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adequate sleep is essential for health and well being. According to the American Psychological Association, most healthy adults need an average of eight hours sleep each night for optimum function. People who do not sleep properly are prone to irritability, short temper, lack of concentration and slower reflexes than those who sleep eight hours or more each night. Children who do not get proper sleep may react with irritability and temper tantrums. They lack the ability to concentrate and have difficulty learning in the school setting.

Stress Management

The effects of stress on emotional and physical health has been well documented and research still continues on the effects of stress. While it may be impossible to totally avoid stress, it is possible to manage stress in a positive ways. Stress can wear down the body and mind. It is important to channel stress constructively. People who live with chronic stress may find it difficult to relate to others, even family members, in a positive way. Such circumstances can become stressful for the entire family. Children pick up on the stress of their parents and may begin to feel the effects as well. Lessen stress by choosing an uplifting and relaxing activity such as yoga, meditation or painting. Even taking a daily walk can help to clear your mind can help relieve stress.

Don't Smoke

Building a healthy family means setting good examples. One of the ways that children learn is by mimicking the behavior of adults, especially parents and other close relatives. Smoking is one habit your children can do without and so can you. Don't smoke around your children and ask friends and relatives to do honor your wishes, respect your children and do likewise.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

If you must consume alcohol, do so in moderation. Drinking in excess can have detrimental effects on the body, causing liver, kidney and other bodily damage. Alcohol can also cause negative changes in behavior.

Balance

All work and no play can be bad for your health. Balance is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Many people get carried away and do things in excess. Excessive habits can pertain to work, eating, smoking, drinking or other behaviors. Balance activities to include work, rest and recreation in the proper proportions.
