Overview

acid reflux diet plan : Overview
Acid reflux is a troublesome condition where acid in the stomach flushes back up and into the esophagus. This condition can make eating difficult and painful. There are medications that will help, but anyone who has the condition should change their diet and monitor their eating habits. There are myths and truths that you will discover when looking for an acid reflux diet plan. New studies have shown some myths are just that, myths!

Step 1

Eat foods rich in carbohydrates like pasta, breads and rice. These complex carbohydrates help to absorb acid in the stomach.

Step 2

Eat 4 to 6 small meals instead of 3 large ones. Small meals cut down on the acid produced in the stomach, thereby helping to reduce acid reflux. Establish a regular routine for eating meals and snacks. Small changes can make a big difference.

Step 3

Avoid fast foods and high fatty foods. The stomach will need to make more acid to break down fat and in the process produce a large amount of acid. Drinking soda is a huge no no. It contains carbonated water and citric acid causing the stomach to produce high amounts of acid during digestion.

Step 4

Avoid eating too much. As doing so will stimulate your stomach to make more acid in order to digest what you have eaten.

Step 5

Elevate yourself for at least 30 to 45 minutes after eating and avoid bending over as this can cause acid to come back into the esophagus.

Step 6

Take a walk after meals. Not only does it burn calories, but it also gives your food time to digest.

Step 7

Sleep with your head elevated about 6 to 8 inches. This will allow the acid to stay in your stomach.

Step 8

Eat more foods such as non-fat dairy products. Trade tomatoes for zucchini and chocolate chips for peanut butter chips. Use more dried herbs instead of black pepper. Fresh vegetables and lean meats are a plus. Use two egg whites in place of one egg. Stay away from products containing vinegar which can cause a lot of acid in the stomach.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • WARNING : Be careful when taking any medication. Always read the directions and follow your doctor's instructions. Do not try to medicate yourself. Do not drink or at least limit your intake of alcohol. Beer is the worst form of alcohol to drink. It causes the stomach to produce large amounts of acid. Avoid milk. Drinking milk before bedtime may help acid reflux for a short period of time, but can ultimately cause acid to build up. When you lie down to sleep, the acid will flow back into the esophagus.
