Pattabhi Jois, the internationally renowned Yoga Guru and Director of Ashtanga Yoga Institute, Gokulam in Mysore, passed away on May 18. He was 93-years-old and travelled and taught into his 90’s. He is credited with transmitting the ancient practice of Ashtanga yoga to the west—having been “discovered” when a Belgian man mentioned him in a book and published his address in the 60’s. Since then, countless people from Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow to the many less famous yoga teachers who carry on the tradition have studied with him.
He’s mentioned in this
article. Pattabhi Jois was introduced to Yoga when he was 12. After watching a demonstration in school, he left home for Mysore to meet T. Krishnamacharya and become his disciple, from 1927-1945.
How lucky for those who were able to train directly with him in Mysore or at clinics around the world. He will be missed.
