I just finished reading “Raw foods for Dummies” and have armed myself with a dehydrator and a strong blender. My goal is just to begin adding the food into my diet, not go 100%. Three kids, a full-time job, and a husband who only wants to cook steak don’t leave me much time. (Full disclaimer: my husband is a much better and more patient chef than I, and cooks lovely meals quite often. His exact words concerning the raw food diet was something like “I’ll eat it, but I won’t prepare it.” )
Preparing raw food meals is fairly prep-intensive, so I recruited our babysitter to help. After a few breakfasts of various blended nuts, oats and fruit, we came to the realization that raw foods breakfasts look like baby food. All the kids refused to even take a bite. I was starving by the second day, and skipped my prepared lunch and opted instead for a Mexican food lunch (con margarita)!!
Eating more frequently helped the gnawing hunger I had. Although by the end of the week, I was the only one eating any of the raw food meals, while the rest of the family was literally eating bread and butter.
I thought all the food was wonderful, but it’s hard to rationalize the prep time when no one else is eating it. I am still hoping to convert others. The Pad Thai recipes were my favorite.
I thought the kids would love the dehydrated fruits and vegetables, but surprisingly they didn’t. Unknowingly, they must prefer the sulfites added to the store-bought dried veggies.
I’m not sure how this trial will end. Definitely, if I had a full-time chef, then this is the way I would be eating 75% of the time. However, in my real life, I’m not sure multiple diets will work.
